Synonyms, Antonyms, and Context Clues Practice

Members in the Education Center have been busy this week working on their homework and literacy stations.  This week members' literacy station work centered on building vocabuary.  Members looked up the definitions to specific words on the computer and then they wrote these definitions down.

Once they completed this, students had to read an article and fill in the blanks with the correct words.  Members also had practice finding both synonyms and antonyms for words which helps aid in reading comprehension and vocabulary building.  Great job, members!

Valentine's Day Trees

Members have been quite busy in the Education Center working on their Valentine's Day trees. Members traced their hand on a piece of paper which then became their tree and branches. Next, they put pre-cut hearts around the tree to resemble leaves.   Members had fun with this activity and it their artwork is now hanging up outside the Education Center.  If you are here, come and check out their work!

Tiger Tessellations

Did you know that only three shapes can tessellate by themselves?  The only shapes that can tessellate solely on their own are the triangle, square and hexagon.  Last week, members worked hard on their homework as well as creating math tessellations. Members read an article on what a tessellation is and answered reading comprehension questions about it.   Once they completed the reading comprehension worksheet, members created their own tiger tessellation template and traced this on the paper provided. Next, members decorated it in any way they liked. Here was the end result. Great work members!

Creating Fractal Tetrahegons

Members worked on their math skills yesterday in the Education Center.  Once members finished their homework, we focused our literacy stations on cross curricular math.  Members read an article on geometric patterns and answered reading comprehension questions about geometric shapes.

Next, members created 3D fractal tetrahegons using mini marshmallows and toothpicks.  Once they created the base, they built a 3D fractal tetrahegon using twenty four toothpicks and ten mini marshmallows. Once they created this, we connected these together to build an even bigger structure. Math can be interactive and fun.

January Members of the Month

Each month, we will be recognizing eight members in grades K-8 that show great leadership skills and service  to the club.   Great job to these eight members, and if you are in the club, come and see their pictures posted on the bulletin board outside of the Education Center. Keep up the great work.

Learning About Martin Luther King

This week, as part of our literacy stations, members extended their learning in the Education Center by exploring Martin Luther King.  Members read the biography of Martin Luther King and answered reading comprehension questions.

Members also created Martin Luther King posters that highlighted facts that they learned about him and we displayed these in the Education Center.  Members then read Martin Luther King's I Have A Dream speech and then created their own I Have A Dream Poems.

Members extended their learning further by reading the poem The Crayon Box That Talked, by Shane Derolf.  Students compared and contrasted the similarities in the poem with the facts they learned about Martin Luther King.

Overall, members did an outstanding job this week.  Keep up the great work!
